If you dream of a career as a Writer or Director, this course is for you.

The Writing & Directing course is perfect for students who want to write and create original work for the stage and theatre, as well as those who want to direct theatrical works, from contemporary plays to the classics. You will be taught and mentored by experienced industry experts who are currently working as writers and directors.

With units focusing on directing and production, theatre studies, and writing workshops, you will gain knowledge in complementary and intertwined practices of writing and realise the script as a director, while laying the blueprint for character, action, performance and production.

Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sought-after industry placements. You will also work closely with students from other courses to foster a well-rounded understanding of the arts and entertainment industries.

Collarts offers students a variety of real-life industry experiences so that they are career-ready when they graduate. Through our industry partnerships, students have opportunities to gain access to a variety of real-world experiences and industry connections.

BACHELOR OF PERFORMING ARTS (WRITING & DIRECTING)

 

The Bachelor of Performing Arts (Writing & Directing) course is perfect for students who want to write and create original work for the stage and theatre, as well as those who want to direct theatrical works, from contemporary plays to the classics.

The Bachelor degree can be completed in six trimesters (2 years) of full-time study or part-time equivalent.

DIPLOMA OF PERFORMING ARTS

 

The Diploma of Performing Arts is an interdisciplinary performing arts program nested within a suite of bachelors degrees in Writing and Directing, Acting, and Stage Management.

The Diploma of Performing Arts course offers foundational knowledge of direction and writing within the performing arts and is perfect for students wanting to work as writers and directors in a variety of performing arts fields including stage and theatre.

The diploma can be completed in two trimesters (8 months) of full-time study, where you will have the opportunity to progress into the Bachelor Degree (subject to academic performance).

 

THROUGHOUT THE DIPLOMA, YOU WILL

 

Develop broad and coherent knowledge of the theories, concepts, and social functions associated with performance

Utilise theoretical, practical, and creative knowledge to enter the performing arts industry at an introductory level

Analyse information from a range of sources to evaluate approaches to unpredictable problems and changing contexts in performing arts practice

Employ cognitive, technical, and communication skills in performing arts practice

Communicate key specialist knowledge of performing arts practice as a basis for collaboration and community engagement

Exercise initiative and judgement in decision-making and planning for performing arts practice

Apply theoretical, creative, and technical knowledge and skills to performing arts practice

Work autonomously on performing arts projects with responsibility and accountability for own outputs in independent or collaborative situations

ELIGIBILITY & ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

Applicants will need to attend an admissions interview. You will be asked questions about your experience, background, and interest in the course and/or industry

Applicants are required to present a 300-word statement of engagement with the performing arts that reflects on an experience they consider to be a catalyst for their interest in the discipline

 

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

 

DIPLOMA APPLICANTS

Applicants are required to successfully complete VCAL, VCE, IB, or state/international Year 12 equivalent. If students have not completed the year 12 requirements, they must be at least 20 years of age

The Diploma can be used as a pathway into the Bachelor degree

There are no ATAR minimum or subject requirements

 

BACHELOR APPLICANTS

Applicants are required to successfully complete VCE, IB, or state/international Year 12 equivalent

VCAL students are not eligible for the Bachelor until they have successfully completed the diploma

If students have not completed the year 12 requirements, they must be at least 20 years of age

There are no ATAR minimum or subject requirements

 

WORK & LIFE EXPERIENCE APPLICANTS

If none of the above qualifications have successfully been completed, applicants must be 20 years of age or older with 2 years of work experience to apply

 

HOW TO APPLY

 

Non-Year 12 applicants may apply directly on the website, and a Future Student Advisor will be in touch to arrange an interview

Year 12 applicants must apply through VTAC. VTAC opens in August each year. Place the appropriate Collarts course into one of your preferences and a Future Student Advisor will be in touch to arrange an interview
