Screen & Media student Juliette took her skills from the classroom to the studio, landing an in-house editing internship at  Never Too Small - a YouTube-based media company dedicated to small footprint design and living.

How it started

“The editing internship was suggested to me by one of my lecturers! During my study I had written a case study/report about the growing trends of short form content and the ways in which the film industry is moving in that direction, so I was interested to experience how a YouTube production company operates.”

Upskilling and different roles

“During my time I've strengthened how I creatively apply my technical skills and collaborate with others.

There isn't a 'right way' to do most creative jobs, especially when our industry is changing all the time. Therefore, making connections with industry professionals and learning as many different styles/techniques/pathways has felt most important to me moving forward.

I've been lucky enough to experience a wide variety of roles but I most enjoy editing, and more specifically the 'team favourites' edits. They're the most fun and I get to highlight people’s bright and funny personalities.

This internship taught me to be confident in myself, pushing myself out of my comfort zone to be creative, experimental and working as part of a team.”

Juliette’s advice for students

“I would advise students to talk to/work with as many different people as possible and watch/ask them about their process. Also ask people for feedback on your performance!!

Getting feedback is often the scariest part of doing any work, but reflecting on your work (soft or hard skills) only helps you improve faster, and more often than not you'll be receiving positive comments :)”
