Earlier this year, Bachelor of Fashion Marketing student Eliya Crossman travelled to Paris for a semester abroad at the iconic ESMOD Paris, one of the world’s oldest fashion schools. Now back in Australia, Eliya reflects on an experience that shaped her personally, creatively, and culturally.
“Paris is a city that’s hard to describe without sounding like you’re quoting a film. Two months into my exchange program at ESMOD Paris, I catch myself surprised that within just eight weeks, I feel at home.”
From finding her local café to forming friendships with classmates from around the world, Eliya quickly settled into the rhythms of Parisian life.
Eliya remembered walking into her first week at ESMOD and immediately feeling inspired by the international environment.
“I couldn't believe how lucky I was to be surrounded by people from all over the world.”
She also found joy in cultural exchange, sharing Aussie slang and answering the classic questions about whether Australians really say “G’day.”
The workload, however, was a big shift from her routine in Melbourne.
“Right now we’re completing around 16 classes… meaning no two weeks ever look alike. Switching from 2–3 days a week at COLLARTS to a full five-day timetable felt intense at first, but it also means you get close to people in your class fast.”
During her exchange, Eliya witnessed Paris Fashion Week transform the entire city.
“Even if you weren’t directly involved in the events, the energy in the city was electric...Paris transforms for fashion.”
She described bars overflowing, boutiques doubling as wine bars, and the streets buzzing with excitement. One highlight was a public “watch party” that brought thousands together to livestream runway shows.
"With over 10,000 visitors across the week, the energy resembled that of a major sports event.”
Beyond fashion, Eliya embraced the everyday realities and quirks of Parisian living: “Living here has made me realise I'm a bit of a coffee snob and we overcomplicate brunch in Australia.”
She quickly learned that small apartments and efficient lifestyles were simply part of the Parisian experience.
“By 8pm, the city feels most alive: bars, cafés and parks full of people treating public spaces as an extension of their homes.”
Reflecting now, Eliya says the experience continues to shape how she sees the world.
“I find the longer I'm here, the more I marvel at the fact that Paris is a real city—and that if you are fortunate enough to visit it will stick with you forever.”
