I’d been wanting to get into journalism for a while, and when I started looking into different courses, Collarts honestly had everything I was looking for and more. After chatting with Kate Arnott, the Entertainment Journalism coordinator, I got to dive deeper into the course outline, and everything just felt so spot on for me.
What really stood out was how there is plenty of hands-on learning. The course includes real industry experiences, like excursions and practical assignments, which was a huge selling point.
Plus, the option to study part-time meant I could still work and take on an internship, which helped me get straight into the real world of journalism. It also took some of the pressure off and gave me more freedom and time to also enjoy my social life outside of study.
Another big thing for me was the teaching staff. Being taught by industry professionals who have actually worked as journalists is so inspiring.
Hearing their stories and learning from their experiences really motivated me and made the course feel super relevant and exciting.
Summer Sky Journo is basically my creative space—a digital folio where I can share my work and experiences. Right now, I’m covering senior women’s local footy games on the Mornington Peninsula for RPP FM every Saturday morning as part of my internship, and I love being able to document those moments and reflect on what I’m learning.
I’ve worked in social media for over four years now, so I’ve really seen how important it is to self-promote and build a personal brand. Especially as an ex-football player myself, Summer Sky Journo felt like the perfect way to combine everything I love—journalism, sports, social media and storytelling, whilst keeping it all in one place.
I’ve been super lucky to work with some amazing brands and be involved in incredible events. Some highlights include:
Collaborating with L’Oréal Paris
Attending Melbourne Fashion Festival with Lancôme
Going to Melbourne Fashion Week with Realism
Creating content for brands like Peppermayo, Teen Breathe Magazine, Tropeaka, Esmi Skin Minerals, Shark Beauty, The Oodie, Dermalogica, Garnier, Synergie Skin, Maybelline New York, and so many more.
Each opportunity has taught me something new and helped me grow as both a content creator and journalist- learning all around communication skills.
Studying part-time has honestly been a lifesaver. It’s given me the flexibility to properly focus on everything—my studies, work, and creative projects, without feeling completely overwhelmed. I’ve learned how to manage my time better, but more importantly, I’ve learned how to prioritise what really matters to me. Having that balance has made me more productive and more passionate about what I do.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to people—seriously. Connect, ask questions, put yourself out there.
Be your authentic self, and know that it’s completely okay to be vulnerable. That’s where the real connections and growth happens.
Stay true to your voice, and remember that you don’t need to have it all figured out right away. Just start, and keep showing up.
