Laura Sykes

Student Counsellor

Laura is delighted to join Sarah on the Well-being student counselling team at Collarts in 2017. She brings to her role as a counsellor over 20 years of experience working face to face with clients experiencing the broad spectrum of challenges facing young people today. She can assist you to build confidence, improve self-esteem, manage performance anxiety, social anxiety, mood disorders, procrastination and relationship issues. Laura is a qualified Family Therapist and works for LifeWorks Family Relationship Centre (6 years) counselling individuals, couples and families.

Laura studied Music, Drama and Fine Arts at Flinders University and Indian Studies and Music at Melbourne University so understands how daunting it can be embarking on a career full of excitement and trepidation. She lived in India in the Himalayas as a young woman and was influenced by the spiritual traditions of the region, particularly Tibetan Buddhism. She became a yoga and meditation teacher and incorporates the techniques of ‘Mindfulness’ into her counselling. Upon her return to Australia, she qualified as a Shiatsu Therapist and Oriental Medicine practitioner teaching in colleges in Sydney and Melbourne and founded and directed complementary medicine clinics in Melbourne. During the 1990’s Laura became interested in how physical symptoms were linked to emotional and psychological imbalance and proceeded over the next two decades to explore mind/body holistic psychotherapies. She works in private practice and in non-government organisations. She is also an educator/coordinator of programs in Parenting and Mens Behavioural Change Facilitator.

Laura specialises in relationship counselling, enhancing intimacy and connection, working from a strength-based, solution-focused approach using process-oriented techniques, EFT, ACT, and secure attachment theories. She is currently broadening her counselling practice for those interested in discovering the archetypal patterns, stories, myths and themes influencing their lives, replacing unproductive life patterns by awakening unrealized potential. Laura is married with two adult children, wants to continue travelling our planet and still imagines she can dance like a ballerina!
