Meet The Collarts Student Support Team

Oct 25, 2021

Being a student isn’t easy. Stress can overwhelm you from all corners — study, finance, extracurricular, personal — and sometimes it can all become too much. Luckily, we’re here for you in those tough times.

Whether you’re frustrated about your timetable or just looking for someone to talk to, our Counsellors and Student Services team (alongside the Student Advisors, who are all graduates of Collarts) will help you find a little bit of comfort in your day. This Mental Health Month and beyond, take advantage and reach out to the services available to you as Collarts students.

 Anne Ligthart

ANNE LIGTHART

WELLBEING PRACTITIONER

What services do you provide?

Wellbeing sessions can include everything from counselling and psychotherapy process where we provide a confidential listening space for all personal or school-related issues, to referrals and liaison with external services, Collarts support services, or family involvement if indicated. We can also offer a link to mentoring programs, secondary consultation for teaching staff, and follow up for ongoing or short-term support.

How can students contact you?
Students can organise appointments with either Anne Ligthart or Garrett Teters. The service is full time at Collarts, five days a week, and is also available on trimester holidays for eight hours a week. Students may make initial contact through Student Services and request a first appointment which runs for 45 minutes. All subsequent appointments may come directly to the Wellbeing service, and the practitioner and student manage the liaison from there.

How do you care for your mental health?
I pay attention to my thoughts, as thought creates form in the world. I practice yoga daily, don't eat meat or dairy food as they hold me down, use iAwake meditation technology, laugh and practice lightness (I don't take myself too seriously), and practice kindness as it’s the glue that holds humanity together. Lastly, I understand that service in the world gives meaning to the world and to my life.

 Meg Elliss

MEG ELLISS

STUDENT SUCCESS MANAGER

What services do you provide?
I oversee our Student Advisor and Student Success teams here at Collarts. Both teams focus on supporting students as they undertake their Collarts journey.

Day to day, I also help create the timetable, help resolve timetable and enrolment issues, and support students in applying for Assignment Extensions and Special Considerations. Our Student Support teams can also help students make an appointment with Wellbeing Counsellors, Academic Support and Career Pathways Counsellors.

How can students contact you?
Students can email support@collarts.edu.au, come and see us in the Student Services office at Wellington St, or email melliss@collarts.edu.au.

How do you care for your mental health?
The biggest lesson I learned in being able to care for my mental health was learning to prioritise, organise and not stressing the little stuff. Whether that's in my professional or personal life, things like writing lists and keeping a diary helps me feel mentally on top of things. Exercise and a sneaky glass of wine also always helps.

Clinton Scott

CLINTON SCOTT

CAREER PATHWAYS ADVISOR

What services do you provide?
I assist students with anything related to careers and jobs. This may be advice on career pathways, assistance with resumes and cover letters, assistance with a job application, interview coaching, networking tips, job search skills, Linkedin profile advice and internships/industry placement.

How can students contact you?

Students can link up with me via Student Services, email me directly at cscott@collarts.edu.au or even just book a Career Pathways appointment via my Calendly link.

How do you care for your mental health?

I've started to focus on my physical fitness and diet a little more. I've recently started swimming (in very cold water) and working on my cardio; it's done wonders for my energy levels and definitely has had a positive effect on my mental health. I've also deleted social media apps from my phone and really made a conscious effort to limit my screen time. If I want to engage with friends, I call them. It's definitely working, I'm sleeping better and smiling more.

Gloria Ragesh

GLORIA RAGESH

STUDENT SUCCESS ADVISOR

What services do you provide?
I actively communicate with students to answer any study support related questions, including Assignment Extensions, Wellbeing Appointments and anything else to help support you in your Collarts journey with us!

How can students contact you?
Through support@collarts.edu.au or in the student services office at Wellington Campus!

How do you care for your mental health?
Keeping to a routine. It can be very simple and not hard to complete, but the sense of accomplishment that comes with a routine helps keep me grounded. I also limit my screen time on socials to ONE hour a day and try to read a book 30 minutes before bed instead of scrolling. Most importantly, being gentle when you don't reach a goal or finish a routine. Be kind to yourself— you deserve it.

Matilda-Ashman

MATILDA ASHMAN

LIBRARIAN & STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICER

What services do you provide?
I manage our library resources - things like books, databases and our program LibGuides! I also work with Chris Sandoe on the Study Support team and can support students in areas like getting started on assignments, structuring an essay, conducting research and providing feedback on drafts.

How can students contact you?
Students can email me directly at mashman@collarts.edu.au but any relevant emails sent to support@collarts.edu.au will find their way to me too.

How do you care for your mental health?
I read a lot and never feel quite right if I don't find a moment in the day to do so. I also prioritise getting out to a green space for a walk every day; living in an apartment, it is really important to me to get outside even for half an hour each day!

Matt Penkethman

MATT PENKETHMAN

STUDENT SUCCESS COORDINATOR

What services do you provide?
My role involves creating the timetable and assisting students with an array of enquiries. This can include timetable/enrolment issues, arranging extensions/Special Consideration or connecting students with our support services: Academic Skills, Wellbeing and Career Pathways.

How can students contact you?
Student Support can be reached at support@collarts.edu.au or at the Student Support Office on our Wellington Street Campus.

How do you care for your mental health?
Meditation is the big one for me. I can feel the difference pretty strongly when I don’t practice enough. I usually carve out 10-20 minutes once a day and follow a guided meditation on an app like Headspace or Calm. Calling family and friends is definitely a positive habit for me in lockdown, as they make sure I don’t get too caught up in my own world.

Chris Sandoe

CHRIS SANDOE

ACADEMIC SKILLS MANAGER

What services do you provide?
I help students along their study journey with all things academic. I work with students on their study plans, motivation, proofing, essay structure, presentation skills, among many other things! Along with Matilda Ashman, we provide help for students who feel a little nervous about studying or those who want to try and take their work to the next level. I also teach Critical Thinking, so get to experience both teaching and support sides at Collarts.

How can students contact you?
There’s a number of ways! You can book an appointment with myself via Calendly or email me at csandoe@collarts.edu.au. Or as always—just like how all roads lead to Rome—all emails sent to support@collarts.edu.au find their destination.

How do you care for your mental health?
I wrangle my dog (or she wrangles me?) into daily activity. It helps keep me on a routine, as she is a dalmatian with endless energy, and there’s no such thing as “no run today!” I make sure to enjoy this time outside; whether it’s the beach, the park, or the wander to the cafe. It ticks a lot of boxes: exercise, socialisation, and change of scenery.
