How Collarts Audio Students Are Learning The Art of Livestreaming

Nov 26, 2020

We're closing out the year with a bang—our final Collarts Connected livestream will be straight from the Auditorium in the Wellington St campus, as staff band Indulgence Collective rock the stage while our Audio Engineering students take control of the lights, camera, and action. Meet a few of the students who will be working behind the scenes to ensure the night runs smoothly.

WILL PETTS

What tasks are you responsible for in this project?

I am responsible for the audio broadcast stream. It is my job to mix the band and get them sounding amazing before it is synced to the video and streamed live.

How are you preparing for it?

Over the past few weeks, I have been utilising previous demo recordings of the band to familiarise myself with their sound. This has also given me time to prepare a solid foundation mix, which will ensure a fast sound check when we go live. I have also spent the past few weeks pushing Collarts' broadcast system to its limits to ensure no faults arise during the event.

How will this project prepare you for your future career?

This project has been an invaluable learning experience. With the rise of ‘working from home’, a lot of the music industry has been forced to shut down or adopt new workflows. The concept of remote mixing and the running of events over the internet is a skill that I believe is priceless and will greatly benefit me in the future.

ASHLEE BROWN

What tasks are you responsible for in this project?

I am responsible for the vision side of the event. I will be alternating roles with Bailey [Darley] throughout the night. We will be overlooking the vision switching for the broadcast feed into Facebook through OBS [live-streaming software], as well as operating the positions of the cameras.

How are you preparing for it?

During our workshops, I have had time to explore the different software I will be using. We have also had a full-production rehearsal where a few members of Indulgence Collective were able to run through a few songs and we could troubleshoot any issues.

How will this project prepare you for your future career?

I’m interested in working within the live sound and AV sector. There’s an immense pressure with live events, as so many things can go wrong but the show still needs to go on within the given timeframe. I hope that by working on this project, I can be more prepared for stressful situations and put less pressure on myself. The remote aspect of this event is something that will also definitely be seen more often in the future.

ALEXANDER WEAVER

What tasks are you responsible for in this project?

My role in the project is to mix part of the broadcast, therefore I will be controlling what the audience hears from the band. I will be managing volume levels and EQ, as well as continuing to ensure that the mix adheres to broadcast standards in terms of loudness and overall peak volume.

How are you preparing for it?

I am preparing for it by participating in several rehearsals and working with pre-recorded tracks so I can get familiar with the band and their sound. One of the biggest challenges we have faced moving into this event has been the realisation that we can't add effects during the performance, so we have to have every single thing we think we might need ready to go before the stream starts, which is proving stressful.

How will this project prepare you for your future career?

Because of COVID massively changing the landscape of the live music scene, streamed events have become much more common and therefore it is a necessity for the modern engineer to understand the ins and outs of mixing a live stream for broadcast, and understanding that although you can't see the audience, they are still there. The biggest learning curve is learning how to quickly create a mix that translates well, which is difficult to learn without lots of practice and knowledge.

HARMANJIT SINGH

What tasks are you responsible for in this project?

For this event, my primarily role is to operate the monitoring console through virtual remote control from my home. This lets me mix both foldback speakers and in-ear monitors for the musicians, letting them clearly hear each other and help improve their performance. My secondary role has been during pre-production, designing the lighting displays and scenes for the event.

How are you preparing for it?

Although working from home isn't the most efficient control method for lights we wanted to program as much as possible beforehand to make operating them during the show easier. The weeks leading up to this have been a lesson in creativity and exploring virtual workflows seeing what we can achieve despite not being in the physical space.

How will this project prepare you for your future career?

Moving forward in the industry, learning about networking methods, cooperating with a team, and efficient workarounds/problem solving has shown to be crucial in the live event scene. Outside of these skills, the ones specifically related to my tasks for the show are very handy in live sound where you can be required to run all these operations and manage them at once.

The Indulgence Collective will be going live for Collarts Connected with the help of Audio Engineering students, this Friday 27th November at 7PM from the Collarts Facebook page.
