Alumni Mo•Louie Wraps Up Her Year On A High Note

Oct 30, 2021

Being shortlisted as Music Victoria's Best Producer is a milestone to celebrate for any aspiring musician. Long before Music Production alumni MoLouie had her name listed alongside some of her industry idols, she was dreaming up a career in the arts.

"I've been singing since I was a baby, but at around 16, I became an artist, writing music and just singing in other bands well before I did production," she shares. "I’ve always wanted to just perform. I was really arty. I just wanted to be in the arts. I had to be in the arts."

Wanting to continue music while learning a new skill set, Mo enrolled in Music Production where she found her niche. We caught up with Mo to chat about her production journey, learnings from Collarts and being a finalist for one of the industry's leading champions of Victorian music.

Congratulations on being shortlisted as Music Victoria's Best Producer. What does this nomination mean to you?

Thank you! I remember when I got shortlisted, I just cried because I was [nominated alongside] Anna Laverty who's been my mentor. I've interned for her before and I look up to her so much.

I've been to all her talks and at Collarts when she comes to chat. And Tash Sultana, Becki Whitton and Alice Ivy are just people I look up to. It was just a bit ridiculous. I thought it was a joke at first because I got tagged in Becki's story, and I thought, "Okay, well, they obviously accidentally tagged me." And then I saw my name there and it was really cool.

I was speaking to my friend Annabel Kilpatrick, who did the [Music Production] course as well. We were just saying how far we’d come when we were in tri six. At the start, we knew absolutely nothing about production. Then we just worked our butts off and we've got really cool stuff happening now. It's a massive high to end the year there. Especially because of COVID, it was very anticlimactic to end a degree without being able to go out and celebrate, so it was a really great way to end the course. It was awesome.

How would you say Collarts has shaped your journey and your career?

I do more production now. I've got more hands-on in my songs where I can actually craft the sounds where I didn't have the skills to do that before. I was still writing music and I was working with other producers, but to be on the other end is quite nice. I feel I have a greater understanding now of being in the producer’s shoes and being in the artist’s where I can be sympathetic and empathetic to both roles.

What would you say was your biggest takeaway has been from studying Music Production at Collarts?

It's enormously helped. Being surrounded by a community that supports one another. I had a lot of friends who supported one another and we knew how hard it got. We would just lift each other up, and listen to each other's music. It was really helpful and the teachers were really amazing. They always had time for you. You could always bring your own things and get feedback. It was really, really cool.

A special shout out to Dan Murtagh, who was amazing in my final tri. I learned so much from him and he was just unbelievable. I was able to craft songs that I was so proud of and didn't even think I could get to.

In your latest release Body, you talk about body positivity and self-confidence. How important is it for you to get these messages out through your music?

It's great! It's a process for me. Five years ago, I'd have never done something so revealing like that. It's all about creating and going through your own journey. I was feeling a bit funny with my body. I used to think that only one type of body was beautiful, which is just not right.

I took that energy and focused it on myself instead of looking in the mirror and being like, "Oh, change this, change this." Instead, I flipped it around to be, "I like that. I like that."

"I just think you've got to have a positive
mental attitude about it, otherwise it feeds into what you do and what you love."

Can you share a little bit about the process of making this track?

I was working on it for three years. It's been through some times, through a few different people. I really wanted to release it and I didn't want to let it go. I wrote it with my friend, Stephen Carmichael (artist Dirty Versachi).

Then when I was feeling really confident in my production in trimesters five and six, I just nutted it out, kept working on it and also had the guidance of my teachers. I wouldn't have been able to get it out without their help. I was learning production, so I was taking skills I learnt in class and then testing them on Body when I was making it.

When I'm [unsure about releasing], I retrain my mind to just be like, "Okay, this is really great. Look at where it's come from. What do I love about it?" I just think you've got to have a positive mental attitude about it, otherwise, if you are constantly picking out the negative, it feeds into what you do and what you love. I'm obviously not incredible at production yet, but I've come such a long way from when I started. I just wanted to timestamp where I was at as a producer.

What excites you about production and working in music?

It's definitely changed since I started studying. I love performing and I love spontaneity, especially playing with a band. I love collaboration and working with people. I think that's where I get the most excitement and joy.

Since I started at Collarts and learning more about sound and production, just the crafting of a sound and getting it to a point where it's like, "Oh, that sounds like butter." That also excites me. I reckon those two things just make me really excited. Especially when you find the right synth sound and it's perfect. It keeps me going.
