DEAN
Dr Raffaele Marcellino

BMus with merit, GradDipEd, PhD, MACE, JP

Raffaele is an Australian composer and educator whose award-winning music has been performed by many leading local and international ensembles. He is a regular recipient of public and private commissions, and publications of his music are available through Currency Press, Opus House Press, Red House Editions and ABC Classics. Raffaele’s output includes music for the stage, television, radio and the concert hall. 
In addition to his work as a composer, Raffaele is an experienced educator having worked in the secondary and tertiary sectors, including the University of Tasmania, University of Sydney and the Australian Institute of Music, before joining Collarts.

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Ian Harvey

BEd, Grad Dip Mgt

Prior to joining Collarts in 2011, Ian was the Executive Officer of the Australian Music Association and has a 25-year history of working in the Australian music industry. With a background in education, much of Ian’s work has focused on the creation of opportunities for students to engage with music. Ian created the music advocacy program Music: Play for Life and designed the Music: Count Us In program, the world’s largest school music activity with more than 500,000 Australian students participating each year. 
Ian is a previous Chair of the International Music Industry Coalition and Deputy Chair of the government’s Music Education Advisory Group. He is the convener of the Australian Wireless Audio Group on behalf of the Australian Commercial and Entertainment Technologies Association, and is also working on the development of the innovative Music Futures program.

PROGRAM LEADER, AUDIO PRODUCTION

Dr Paul Doornbusch

PhD (algorithmic composition), BCompSc, BMus, DipEd

With more than ten years of international practice and teaching experience, and recognition in the International Who’s Who of Music and Musicians, Paul is regarded as one of Australia’s major players in the electronic and computer music scene. Born in Melbourne, he is a composer, sonologist, researcher and occasional performer who works largely with algorithmic composition systems for traditional instruments and electronics. Paul’s work has been presented internationally in concerts throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, and Australasia, and ranges from compositions involving instruments and electronics to media works. Having successfully completed a major research project – to reconstruct and document the music played by Australia's first computer, CSIRAC – as composer-in-residence at the Computer Science department of the University of Melbourne, Paul comes to Collarts as the head of Audio Production.

PROGRAM LEADER, MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Gene Shill

MA (Entertainment – Arts Management), BA (Music Industry)

As a producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and arranger, Gene has produced, written and recorded more than 40 commercial and independent releases for companies including Sony BMG, Elektra, Rhino, Universal Music Group, Vale Records, Ministry of Sound, Red Cherry Records and Vicious Vinyl, resulting in excess of 800,000 sales worldwide. Schooled in classical saxophone and orchestral composition, he continues to be heavily influenced by his experience touring internationally and recording as a jazz, soul, funk, rock and neo-soul session musician. Gene is also a lecturer and author who delivers workshops, seminars and written texts on the fundamental aspects and continual development of the music and entertainment industries, specialising in such areas as music production and sound design for TV, film and media, musical supervision, copyright law, licensing, entertainment management, branding and marketing, professional artist development, musical direction, and programming and arranging. To add to his other academic qualifications, he is in the midst of his PhD in Music Technology and Education with a major in Recording Technology and Intellectual Property/Music Law. At Collarts, Gene will head up the Music Business course.

Jesse Roberts

Ad. Dip Sound Production, Dip TAA, CIV TAE, VIT registered 

Having worked as a sound engineer for the past thirteen years, Jesse has recorded a number of albums, countless demos and has mixed hundreds of live performances for artists as diverse as Celadore, Kavisha Mazella and Lothlorien. As well as owning and managing Psi Funk Studio, he’s worked in education for ten years teaching in secondary and tertiary environments. He has taught Certificate II to Degree level courses at Box Hill Institute, Swinburne, Little Yarra Steiner School, Lilydale Heights, Healesville Living & Learning Centre and Victoria University. Jesse has been the Assistant Chief Assessor for the Certificate III Music Industry Technical Production exam for four years and an exam-setting panel member for three. He also coordinated the Bravado Youth Film Festival and Lounge sessions for the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Jesse will bring his expertise to the Audio Production courses at Collarts.

DIGITAL PRODUCER

Brett Woolford

BMusEd, Cert IV TAA, Pro Tools 210M (certified operator)

A talented guitarist, drummer and bass player, Brett combines his career as a musician with audio production and music industry teaching. As a Pro Tools Certified Operator, he has produced radio commercials for companies including IKEA, Coopers Brewery, and the Office of Road and Safety. Brett has also recorded numerous bands, as well as producing a variety of music for online games. He currently plays drums in Creatures of Silence and guitar in Scorn of a Superhero. Brett has taught music and technical production at Swinburne Senior Secondary College and Lilydale High School, and has been with Collarts since 2009, co-ordinating the delivery of Collarts’ music industry skills to more than a thousand students across Australia and teaching a number of subjects in the Diploma courses.

ASSISTANT REGISTRAR

Lisa Jennings

BMus, MMus, PGrad Dip Arts Mgt

Lisa started her career as a clarinetist playing Principal Clarinet with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra while studying, then held long-term contracts with many of Australia’s professional orchestras. She has toured extensively with Oz Opera, The Australian Ballet, the Australian Opera and The Australian Pops Orchestra where she was the jazz soloist for 15 years, and has played for the Melbourne productions of Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, South Pacific and Chess.
A stint on the board as the players’ representative at the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra piqued Lisa’s interest in management, which led to her working for Melba Recordings in operations and then taking the position of manager at the Centre for Youth Music at the Charles Darwin University in Darwin for three years. Lisa has taught at the VCA High School, Monash University, The University of Western Australia and Charles Darwin University.

TEACHERS

Jason Torrens (JT)

Cert IV TAA, DipMus, Pro Tools 210M (certified operator)

As the owner/manager of the very successful Debasement Recording Studios in Ferntree Gully, JT has worked with clients including Bodyjar, The Pictures and hundreds more. He is an in-demand drum teacher who has taught students across a whole range of ages and skill levels: kids as young as five, VCE Solo Performance and tertiary students, and bands and artists to help them improve their sound and skills. Jason also plays in several Melbourne bands himself, including Bugdust, Cisco Caesar and Oscar Mike.
JT is a Pro Tools Certified Operator with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, who teaches Audio and Technical Production for Collarts. He can sometimes be found in our studio producing audio for clients such as the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge and J Rock.

Kiernan Box

Kiernan Box is a musician, composer and arranger, as well a qualified solicitor. Artists he has worked with in Australia include the Blackeyed Susans, Augie March, Busby Marou, Dan Kelly, The Disappointments, The Dumb Earth, Spencer P Jones and the Last Gasp, The Devastations, David McComb and Co-Star. Kiernan has also worked on orchestral arrangements with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Kiernan has been a music teacher for 10 years, specialising in copyright, the international music business, artist management, recording and publishing agreements, music direction and production, music appreciation and critical listening. Previously he has also written study materials for the subjects he has taught.

Jonathan Zion

Jonathan Zion brings a wealth of experience to Collarts having been in in the music industry for 22 years, both as an electric and double bass player, and as a musical director. This has included 20 years of teaching experience and 18 years of national and international touring experience (including trips to Europe, Russia, New Zealand, Japan, the US and Canada). Jonathan has produced 9 albums for other artists both in Australia and the USA and is a current member of several bands including Anton Delecca Quartet, Luke Howard Trio, Lior and Ian Moss Trio. His academic experience includes developing and writing the Bachelor of Music degree for Melba Conservatorium of Music.

Angela Librandi

Angela Librandi has been a professional musician and singing teacher for the past 20 years, as well as being a sessional singer and back-up vocalist for artists including Renee Geyer, Kate Ceberano, Vanessa Amorosi, Anthony Callea, Tina Arena, Marcia Hines and Jimmy Barnes.

Matthew Coleman

Matthew Coleman is a professional musician who has been involved in high-level music performance on bass guitar through a range of jazz and contemporary styles, as well as musical group management from start-up and composition through to performance. Matthew has a high conceptual understanding of music theory and its relationship to performance and composition. He has developed his teaching and training skills through a variety of situations and disciplines over the past four years.

Duncan Kinnell

Duncan Kinnell’s music skills cover keyboards, drums and percussion. He studied classical piano for 5 years and contemporary piano/keyboard for 3 years. Duncan reads music and is well versed in all styles, including all variations of South American music, modern dance, rock, jazz and orchestral. He also has intimate knowledge of specialised music software. Artists Duncan has worked with include Anthony Callea, Marina Prior, Todd McKenna, Ross Wilson and many others.

Matthew O'Connor

Matthew is a professional guitarist, teacher and freelance Engineer/Producer. Since 1989 he has taught guitar privately, and has played with many well known artists including:  Soulbeats, Daryl Cotton, Rhonda Burchmore, Joanne BZ, Ilanda, Zoe Badmi, Past To Present, Australian Idol Tour/Young Divas, 80’s Idol, Brian Canham (Pseudo Echo), Dale Ryder (Boom Crash Opera),David Sterry (Real Life),Australian Tourisim awards- Funky Film Express, Wella Hair Festival, Brisbane Indycar , Australia Day Celebrations at Myer Music Bowl. Matthew is a freelance Engineeer/Producer for World-Ring Studios, Acadia Studios, and Red Cherry Records.

Kevin McFerran

Kevin McFerran is a versatile musician and specialist teacher with 23 years’ experience in high school and tertiary music education. Kevin has a diploma in teaching percussion and an associate diploma in trumpet. He has also worked with a huge number of bands, artists and theatre shows including the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Nitin Sawhney’s Aftershock project and the Boy From Oz.
